Live from the Moon : Film, Television and the Space Race

Description

"We choose to go to the Moon, not because it is easy but because it is hard." President John F. Kennedy's words spoke of an American enterprise that rivalled, and echoed, that of the discovery and settling of his own country a century before. At the height of the Cold War between America and Russia, hundreds of spacecraft, both manned and robotic, travelled into outer space - the New Frontier. They sent back awe-inspiring images and sounds from Earth orbit, the Moon, and the planets of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Venus; they also overturned our preconceptions about our own planet. "Live from the Moon" is the exploratory story of this remarkable cultural and political phenomenon. Expert and enthusiast Mike Allen examines these images sent back from space, their use as propaganda, their value as drama and entertainment, and their spiritual role in shaping humanity's changing view of itself across the second half of the twentieth century. He looks at the complex relationship between space exploration, film and television during these decades to show the synergy between them in pushing forward the frontiers not only of our knowledge of the Universe, but of our need to visualise the furthest reaches of our imaginations in order to fully know what it is to be human.

Esther de Waal, one of Celtic Christianity's preeminent scholars, shows how this Management of Dryland Salinity : Future Strategic Directions download book tradition of worship draws on both the pre-Christian past and on the fullness of the Gospel. As this riveting tour-de-force opens, the police already want to talk to the photographer Cass Neary about a mysterious death she was involved with previously, but before they can bring her in, Cass accepts a job offer from overseas and hops on a plane. In Helsinki, she authenticates a series of disturbing but stunning images taken by a famous fashion photographer who has cut himself off from the violent Nordic music scene where he first made his reputation. Paid off by her shady employer, she buys a one-way ticket to Reykjavik, in search of a lover from her own dark past. But when the fashion photographer's mutilated corpse is discovered back in Finland, Cass finds herself sucked into a vortex of ancient myth and betrayal, vengeance and serial murder, set against a bone-splintering soundtrack of black metal and the terrifying beauty of the sunless Icelandic wilderness. In this eagerly awaited sequel to the award-winning Generation Loss, Cass Neary finds her own worst fears confirmed: it's always darkest before it turns completely black.

Management of Dryland Salinity : Future Strategic Directions

Description

Dryland salinity is becoming a growing problem for Australia, as it impacts upon agriculture, water quality, infrastructure and the environment. In the context of developing a national policy for natural resource management, this report contains the outcomes of the review of the current national policy framework on dryland salinity and outlines new strategic directions. This policy framework recognises that dryland salinity should be addressed in an integrated manner with other land, water and vegetation degradation issues. Rather than in isolation, and at the appropriate catchment and regional scale. While this report can provide a broad approach to addressing dryland salinity, it does not suggest that the dryland salinity problem can be entirely solved or that we have all the knowledge required to develop solutions to the problem. The directions outlined in this document are the result of a fruitful collaboration across jurisdictions, acknowledging that governments and industry must work together in partnership with communities to ensure that the future management of dryland salinity achieves significant positive change.

D. W. Winnicott: The Child, the Family and the Outside World

The Child, the Family and the Outside World

Description

Dr. Winnicott explores the basic relationships of childhood starting with the bond of love between mother and infant, which he views as the key to personality. Speaking directly and informally, he explains everyday issues such as feeding, crying, playing, independence, and shyness as well as serious problems such as stealing and lying.Throughout each discussion, Dr. Winnicott emphasizes the inborn abilities of parents and carefully distinguishes these from the skill that must be learned. Fascinating chapters on the roots of aggression, on the fear of dependence and its unfortunate consequences in adulthood, and on the innate morality of the baby reveal Dr. Winnicott's characteristic wit and insight.

Fanon s masterwork is a classic alongside Edward Said s Orientalism or The Autobiography of Malcolm X, and it is now available in a new translation that updates its language for a new generation of readers. The Wretched of the Earth is a brilliant analysis of the psychology of the colonized and their path to liberation. Bearing singular insight into the rage and frustration of colonized peoples, and the role of violence in effecting historical change, the book incisively attacks the twin perils of postindependence colonial politics: the disenfranchisement of the masses by the elites on the one hand, and intertribal and interfaith animosities on the other. What is Dyslexia?: A Book Explaining Dyslexia for Kids and Adults to Use Together

Description

Praise for What is Dyslexia?: 'informative, based on the latest research and compassionate - three qualities that make this a must read for parents and children struggling with dyslexia.' - Paul M. Quinlan, Ph.D. from The Curtis Blake Center Praise for An Introduction to Dyslexia for Parents and Professionals by the same author: 'Hultquist writes in such measured, clear and uncluttered prose that no one can take the journey from diagnosis to remediation without feeling that one is in the hands of someone who really understands the issues surrounding a dyslexia diagnosis, not only for the one diagnosed but also for the whole family and the professionals working with them.' - Dyslexia Contact What is Dyslexia? is designed to help adults explain dyslexia to children. The author provides information about all the most common types of dyslexia: trouble with sounds, trouble remembering how letters and words look, trouble finding words, and mixed dyslexia. He deals with the basic facts and adopts a style which is accessible to children without talking down to them. The book includes clear examples which children will be able to understand, as well as activities for parents to do with their children. The author emphasises that everyone has strengths and weaknesses and that having dyslexia is okay. This book will be valuable for parents of children with dyslexia, as well as other adults working with children with dyslexia.

The Thickety: A Path Begins

Description

The Thickety: A Path Begins is a spellbinding tale about a girl, the Thickety, and the power of magic. Fans of Neil Gaiman will love this thrilling new world. When Kara Westfall was five years old, her mother was convicted of the worst of all crimes: witchcraft. Years later, Kara and her little brother, Taff, are still shunned by the people of their village, who believe that nothing is more evil than magic...except, perhaps, the mysterious forest that covers nearly the entire island. It has many names, this place. Sometimes it is called the Dark Wood, or Sordyr's Realm. But mostly it's called the Thickety. The villagers live in fear of the Thickety and the terrible creatures that live there. But when an unusual bird lures Kara into the forbidden forest, she discovers a strange book with unspeakable powers. A book that might have belonged to her mother. And that is just the beginning of the story. Miss Read: Village Affairs

Village Affairs

Description

Miss Read's future as headmistress hangs in the balance as the village school is threatened with closure. 'People in Fairacre simply won't stand for their children being uprooted, and carted away in buses like so many - er, so many--' 'Animals?' prompted Mr Roberts helpfully. 'No, no, not animals,' said Mrs Mawne testily. 'Animals don't go in buses! What I mean is, we won't have it. We'll never let Fairacre school close.' She looked round the table. Her face was red, her eyes bright. 'Agreed?' The village of Fairacre is buzzing with rumours of the imminent closure of its two-class school. As fears grow amid mounting conjecture, headmistress Miss Read's future hangs in the balance. And trouble is never far away as village life is further disrupted by tangled matrimonial affairs and a police investigation. The community must rally together to face this new threat...
